New vision seeks to push ‘merit-based’ public recruitment system, MP says

Amman, June 15 (Petra) – The Lower House Administrative Committee, headed by MP Mohammad Salama Ghuweiri, made a set of final recommendations to improve Jordan’s public sector appointment mechanisms under open advertisement system.

During a committee meeting held on Sunday, in the presence of Assistant Speaker MP Huda Naffa, Ghuweiri said these guidelines came after an “in-depth” study of the Kingdom’s administrative and legislative conditions and a series of discussions with relevant authorities.

The dialogues, he noted, aim to promote principles of “transparency, equal opportunity, and justice” and consolidate public confidence in recruitment procedures within state institutions.

Ghuweiri said the committee recommended “full” adherence to the open advertisement system for all government vacancies and development of “competitiveness” mechanisms for this purpose.

The MP said this drive seeks to make recruitment of “qualified” national workers soley depend on the merit principle without personal interference or unprofessional considerations.

The committee called for launching “clear and binding” national standards for announcing vacancies at all government institutions, he pointed out.

Under the new vision, he said applicants must be Jordanian citizens and at least 18 years old, ruling out a specific university degree for competing to fill public jobs.

The committee also advised reliance on “competitive” exams and personal interviews as the primary assessment tools in the recruitment process, along with a points system for academic appraisal.

On its ultimate goals, he said the projected recipe would make good governance and public interest as the “sole” frame of reference for public sector recruitment processes to curb unfair practices in this context.
