Ramallah, July 27 (QNA) – Palestine has welcomed Ireland’s approval of legislation banning imports from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, calling it a significant step toward strengthening compliance with international law.
In a statement, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the legislation supports Palestinian diplomatic efforts to curb international support for Israel’s settlement enterprise and reflects Ireland’s commitment to international law and justice.
The ministry said Ireland’s decision, along with similar measures taken by other countries to ban imports from Israeli settlements and restrict related commercial activities, should encourage more governments to adopt legislation prohibiting all forms of economic, trade, financial and investment ties with the settlement enterprise.
It said such measures would be consistent with states’ legal obligations under the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion and would strengthen compliance with international law.
The ministry urged countries to follow Ireland’s lead by adopting similar legislation and sanctioning Israeli settlements, settlers and organizations that support settlement activities, saying the measures would strengthen international accountability and help end the Israeli occupation. (QNA)
