Petra, June 19 (Petra) – Chairman of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), Fares Braizat, on Thursday discussed the impact of the regional crisis on Petra’s tourism sector, during a meeting with the Board of Commissioners and representatives from the local tourism industry.

Braizat highlighted the Authority’s continued efforts to monitor the economic repercussions of the crisis, noting that detailed data and statistics on tourism decline and its effects on service providers and workers have been submitted to the government’s economic team.

He stressed PDTRA’s commitment to mitigating these effects through targeted initiatives, including the launch of the “Petra Summer” program, designed to stimulate domestic tourism. The initiative will feature a series of cultural and tourism activities such as archaeological site visits, interactive guided tours, the “Petra at Night” experience, and a lineup of cultural events aimed at revitalizing local tourism and drawing increased interest to the city.

Representatives of the tourism sector submitted several proposals during the meeting, including redirecting government and national events to Petra to stimulate domestic travel, and calling for a comprehensive government action plan to reinforce and sustain the tourism sector amid ongoing regional challenges.

In a separate meeting attended by the Board of Commissioners, Braizat met with community leaders from Wadi Musa to hear their concerns and suggestions. The discussions covered a range of development and service-related issues, particularly infrastructure improvement, employment creation, and expanding development initiatives.

Braizat reaffirmed the critical role of local communities as strategic partners in the region’s comprehensive development process. He reiterated the Authority’s commitment to strengthening communication with local stakeholders and addressing the needs of Petra’s residents.

He also acknowledged that declining tourism revenues have constrained the Authority’s ability to implement several development projects at the desired pace, underscoring the need to reassess priorities and mobilize additional support to sustain PDTRA’s development and service responsibilities.
