Policy Package Unveiled to Develop Livestock, Boost Veterinary Health, and Support Producers

Khartoum, 24 March 2026 (SUNA) – The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries, Dr. Ammar Al-Sheikh Idris, announced a comprehensive package of policies and programs aimed at developing the livestock sector, enhancing animal health, supporting producers, and opening new avenues for investment in the coming period.Dr. Al-Sheikh Idris said the ministry is implementing integrated measures that include prevention, control, epidemiological monitoring, and rapid response, alongside awareness-raising, training, capacity building, and the development of veterinary infrastructure and services. The goal is to protect the national herd and limit the spread of diseases affecting both public health and the national economy.He highlighted intensified efforts to combat transboundary animal diseases, including foot-and-mouth disease, peste des petits ruminants, sheep and goat pox, Rift Valley fever, and rabies, as well as bacterial and parasitic diseases. He underscored the vital role of veterinary quarantine services in safeguarding exports through inspection of livestock and meat in accordance with health regulations.The Undersecretary explained that the ministry’s plans focus on empowering herders and producers, particularly rural women, as key partners in achieving sustainable development. He revealed a contract-based breeding project with smallholders aiming to increase daily milk production from 10 to 50 pounds.He added that the ministry provides veterinary services and guidance to smallholders across various states and addresses challenges facing pastures, including desertification, land degradation, and conflicts.He also noted the adoption of pasture protection measures, including creating firebreaks, cultivating forage plants, and constructing fencing to safeguard grazing areas.BH/BH
