Prince Hassan: Attacks on places of worship, a breach of religious values

Amman, June 23 (Petra) — HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Institute for Interfaith Studies, said on Monday that any attack on peaceful worshippers in places of worship is an attack on core religious values.

In a letter of condolence to Patriarch John X of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All The East over the deadly terrorist bombing at Mar Elias Church in the Dweila neighborhood of the Syrian capital ??Damascus, Prince Hassan said “when some extremists who belong to Islam take responsibility for killing worshippers in churches, they only insult the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the preservation of the human soul.”

The attack, His Highness stressed, is an assault on the values ??of peace and human dignity advocated by Christianity and Islam.

He drew attention to a meeting held in Amman in May, titled “Christians in the Arab Levant and Aspirations for Unity and Enlightenment,” with the participation of Christian religious leaders from the Levant and a select group of Muslim and Christian intellectuals.

The meeting emphasized the moral and behavioral role of religion, without mixing faith and politics, and shunning politicization of religion or religionization of politics, as well as combating all forms of religious or sectarian intolerance and discrimination and hate speech, and abhorring violence.
