Port Sudan, June 16, 2026 (SUNA) — The vessel EUPHORIA, operated by its shipping agent Polaris, berthed at the South Port Container Terminal as part of transshipment trade operations, marking the first such call in a long period. The development reflects growing confidence in Sudan’s seaports and underscores their position as an important hub for maritime trade and regional transport. Speaking on the resumption of transshipment vessel operations at the container terminals of the South Port, Director-General of the Sea Ports Corporation (SPC) Engineer Gailani Mohamed Gailani said the return of this type of trade constitutes a clear indicator of port stability and the effectiveness of its operating environment. He explained that the storage and re-export of cargo through the Port Sudan Container Terminal to regional ports, including Jeddah Port in Saudi Arabia and Latakia Port in Syria, represents a significant development that strengthens the ability of Sudanese ports to attract transit trade, benefiting from their operational efficiency and national expertise. Engineer Gailani added that handling containers within the framework of international transshipment trade is an important achievement that reinforces Sudan’s position on the regional maritime transport map. He commended port employees for their efforts in improving performance, as well as the support and follow-up provided by the corporation’s senior management. SPC Director-General also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning for supporting development programmes and providing operational resources that contribute to improved efficiency and workforce stability. For his part, Director of the South Port Container Terminal Abdullah Hussein said the vessel is among the largest ships operating in the transshipment trade and is carrying 140 containers, equivalent to 136 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). He described its arrival as an important achievement given the exceptional circumstances facing the country.  He affirmed that the container terminal possesses the operational capabilities required to capitalize on regional developments affecting trade and maritime transport, noting the growing confidence of international shipping lines in dealing with the Port Sudan Container Terminal. Abdullah Hussein added that the Sea Ports Corporation will offer special incentives and advantages to shipping lines to promote transshipment trade and attract more vessels and maritime services. He further noted that production rates at the port continue to rise steadily thanks to support from senior management and coordination among various departments, which has ensured the uninterrupted flow of operations and seamless shift handovers, thereby enhancing efficiency and accelerating cargo handling.
