Beijing, October 18 (QNA) – World No. 26 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina captured the Shanghai Masters title on Sunday, defeating fellow Spaniard Rafael Jodar, the world No. 13, after the two Spaniards squared off in the final.
Davidovich Fokina rallied from a set down to prevail 1-6, 7-6, 6-4, claiming his maiden ATP Masters 1000 crown. The victory added to the two ATP Tour titles he had already won this year: on grass in Mallorca, Spain, and on hard courts in Chengdu, China.
For Jodar, the defeat proved costly. He missed the opportunity to break into the world’s top 10 for the first time and was unable to gain ground in the race to qualify for the ATP Finals, scheduled to take place in Turin, Italy, from Nov. 15 to 22.
Jodar will remain ninth in the ATP Finals race, which determines the eight players who qualify for the season-ending championship. He trails Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, American Frances Tiafoe and France’s Arthur Fils. (QNA)
