Khartoum, March 13, 2026 (SUNA) – The Sudanese Journalists Union (SJU) has begun reviewing and revising its membership register, which includes more than 7,000 journalists, as part of efforts to reorganize union work and resume activities from its headquarters in Khartoum. In a statement issued after a meeting of its executive office on Thursday evening, the Sudanese Journalists Union said the review aims to update the journalists’ registry after violations were detected involving the union’s internal regulations, the Press and Publications Act of 2009, and the journalists’ code of conduct. The union said it would remove members found to have committed clear violations of the union’s statutes or professional standards, stressing that names not meeting membership requirements would be struck from its lists. Journalists were also urged to renew their membership and obtain the union’s official press card, while state institutions were called upon to recognize journalists holding valid union identification cards in order to regulate professional practice and curb violations. The executive office further decided to form an internal committee headed by the union’s secretary-general to establish criteria and regulations governing the review process. It was also decided to form additional committees to develop proposals for the next phase and align the union’s status with the requirements of the registrar of professional organizations at the Ministry of Justice, in preparation for resuming union activities pending the convening of the next general assembly. In the same context, the union called on specialized journalistic associations and professional groups to deposit their bylaws and membership records with the union to regularize their status under the Professional Unions Act of 2004.BH/BH
