Sudan’s Ambassador to Japan Discusses Enhanced Humanitarian and Development Support with UNDP

Sudan’s Ambassador to Japan, Ambassador Al-Rayah Haidoub, met on Thursday with the Country Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Japan, Ms. Haolzialich at the programme’s headquarters in Tokyo. The meeting was also attended by Ms. Chika Kondo, an official responsible for the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), and several UNDP department directors, as part of the Sudanese Mission’s efforts to mobilise humanitarian and development support for Sudan.During the meeting, Ambassador Haidoub reviewed the latest political and security developments in Sudan, noting the marked improvement in the security situation and the return of normal life in a large number of cities. He also highlighted the resumption of economic activity in the agricultural, industrial and service sectors, as well as the reopening of air traffic at Khartoum Airport, describing these developments as indicators of the country’s growing stability and gradual recovery.The ambassador expressed the appreciation of the Government and people of Sudan for UNDP’s efforts in supporting humanitarian and development activities during the war. He commended the programme’s return to operating from Khartoum following the return of government institutions and praised its support for war-affected communities and displaced persons, in addition to its continued contributions to the agricultural sector.He underscored the importance of strengthening development projects for Sudan with the Japanese government, one of the largest contributors to United Nations activities, noting Japan’s interest in supporting Sudan in the fields of agriculture, electricity, solar energy and health.For her part, the UNDP Country Director expressed appreciation for the Sudanese government’s cooperation and facilitation of the programme’s operations and activities in Sudan. She reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to expanding its support for humanitarian and development projects aimed at improving the living conditions of war-affected populations, particularly in displacement camps, while also supporting livelihoods for vulnerable households through programmes in agriculture, small-scale industries, poverty reduction and environmental protection.She also affirmed the programme’s readiness to support the Sudanese government’s efforts in any forthcoming electoral processes as part of the transition towards civilian governance by providing technical and logistical assistance and drawing on Japanese expertise and technologies in this field.At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue coordination and joint efforts to prepare proposals for humanitarian and development projects and submit them to the Japanese government for funding and implementation in Sudan.BH/BH
