UN Chief Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza, Calls for Political Solution Based on International Law

New York, July 14 (Petra) – United Nations Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres on Monday called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, urging that it be followed by a political solution grounded in the UN Charter, international law, and relevant UN resolutions.

“What we are witnessing in Gaza is an unprecedented level of death and destruction in recent times,” Guterres told reporters at UN headquarters. “It is undermining the very basics of human dignity for the people of Gaza,” he said, describing the situation as “horrific.”

Guterres expressed hope that the parties involved would be able to overcome current challenges to achieve a ceasefire but stressed that halting the violence alone would not be sufficient. “A ceasefire must lead to a solution,” he said.

He emphasized that peace would only be possible if both Palestinians and Israelis were able to live in states where they could fully exercise their rights.

Guterres said this is why the UN is convening a conference later this month on the two-state solution. “The reality of five million people living in their homeland without rights is a blatant contradiction of the principles of humanity and the provisions of international law,” he said.
