UN Marks International Day of Living Together in Peace

Khartoum, Feb. 1, 2026 (SUNA) – The United Nations marked the International Day of Living Together in Peace, underscoring that peace is not merely the absence of war, but the capacity to live together despite differences of gender, race, language, religion, or culture—anchored in justice and human rights. This is the first observance of the day, following the UN General Assembly’s adoption of Resolution A/RES/79/269 on March 4, 2025, designating January 28 as the International Day of Living Together in Peace. The resolution describes peaceful coexistence as a continuous, long-term process requiring vigilance, care, and active participation by all.Peace is central to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, one of its five pillars alongside People, Planet, Prosperity, and Partnership. The agenda’s preamble calls for building peaceful, just, and inclusive societies free from fear and violence.Amid escalating global conflicts, the day aims to promote awareness of cultural and belief diversity, highlight education’s role in fostering tolerance, and renew commitment to the UN’s founding principles. The resolution urges member states, international organizations, civil society, and the media to mark the day through meaningful actions that advance peace, inclusion, understanding, and solidarity, while rejecting hate speech and incitement to violence—especially in an era where digital platforms amplify harm. The UN reaffirmed its commitment to confronting hatred, discrimination, racism, and inequality. In Sudan’s context, the observance underscores a principle long upheld by society: accountability is individual, peace is foundational, and coexistence remains the path forward.AS/BH
