UN Security Council Welcomes Libyan
Agreement to Hold Elections Within Two Years
New York, 9 Sep 2026 (ONA) — The
UN Security Council has welcomed the agreement reached by Libya’s rival
political parties, which paves the way for elections within two years,
describing the UN‑backed accord signed in Tripoli on 30 August 2026 as a step
towards long‑overdue national polls.
France’s UN Ambassador Jérôme
Bonnafont, who holds the Council presidency this month, said the agreement is
an important step towards free, fair and transparent elections and a push
towards unifying Libya’s institutions in line with the aspirations of its
people.
He stressed the importance of all
relevant Libyan parties supporting the agreement and working towards its
implementation, and expressed the Council’s full support for UN Special
Representative Hanna Tetteh.
Tetteh announced in August 2025 a roadmap
covering three key files for stability in Libya: a comprehensive electoral
framework for presidential and parliamentary elections; the unification of
divided executive institutions through a unified government; and a dialogue
involving various Libyan political and national forces.
