Kassala, 3 February 2026 (SUNA) – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has launched a €3 million project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, aimed at improving youth employment prospects through technical and vocational training in Kassala and Red Sea states.Speaking at the launch ceremony in Kassala, State Minister of Education and Guidance Othman Omar Ali stressed the importance of changing negative perceptions of technical and vocational education. He affirmed that national development depends on revitalizing this sector, noting that vocational training in Sudan has experienced a steady decline since the 1970s.The minister revealed that Kassala State currently has 16 underutilized technical schools and called for UNESCO’s support in rehabilitating and activating them. He added that the ministry is preparing ambitious plans to advance technical and vocational education across the state.For his part, Director of the UNESCO Office in Sudan Ahmed Junaid said the project seeks to bridge the gap between education and labor market needs, expand opportunities for women, youth, and persons with disabilities, and contribute to economic recovery.Meanwhile, UNESCO Director of Education in Sudan Dr. Ayman Badri highlighted the project’s alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to inclusive and equitable education and decent work.UNESCO Vocational Training Projects Manager Wael Mustafa explained that the initiative focuses on improving the quality and relevance of vocational training in both Kassala and Red Sea states, with the aim of creating new job opportunities, especially for girls, displaced persons, and other vulnerable groups.AS/BH
