UNRWA chief: Israeli aid distribution plan for Gaza “will not work”

Amman, May 24 (Petra) – The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, has said that the Israeli-proposed aid distribution mechanism for Gaza is unworkable.

In a statement posted Saturday on UNRWA’s official Facebook page, Lazzarini said, “No humanitarian organization that truly adheres to fundamental humanitarian principles can operate under such a plan.”

He added, “I do not believe this model will succeed. It appears to have been designed more to support a military objective than to address genuine humanitarian concerns.”

According to the World Food Programme, around two million people in Gaza are at risk of severe hunger and famine unless immediate action is taken.
