Amman, May 21 (Petra) – The World Health Organization’s (WHO) 78th World Health Assembly has adopted a resolution addressing the deteriorating health conditions in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan.
The resolution, introduced by the Kingdom of Bahrain on behalf of the Arab Group in Geneva, comes amid a surge in Israeli violations against the health sector, including continued targeting of hospitals and medical teams, obstruction of ambulance operations, and denial of patient access to treatment.
The resolution calls for an end to the blockade imposed on Gaza, the lifting of restrictions on the entry of medicines and medical supplies, and the facilitation of patient and medical personnel movement. It also urges support for the Palestinian health system and enhancement of its capacity to respond to worsening crises caused by the occupation.
The resolution was supported by 104 countries, with only four voting against it Germany, Israel, the Czech Republic, and Hungary while 14 countries abstained.
Furthermore, the resolution calls on WHO to take immediate and effective action to protect healthcare facilities and workers, combat disease outbreaks and malnutrition, and provide psychological and social support to populations affected by the ongoing conflict and occupation.
