Ramallah, Jan. 29 (Petra) – The Palestinian Presidency on Wednesday called on the United Nations to fulfill its responsibilities under international law and compel the Israeli occupation authorities to reverse their decision to suspend the operations of UNRWA. It also urged ensuring the agency’s continued provision of services to Palestinian refugees until their issue is resolved in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
In a statement, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, the Palestinian Presidency spokesperson, stated that the occupation’s decision to halt UNRWA’s operations is unacceptable, condemnable, and constitutes a provocation against the Palestinian people. He emphasized that the decision violates UN resolutions under which the agency was established.
Abu Rudeineh added that the Israeli decision challenges international legitimacy and escalates tensions in the region by undermining the services provided by UNRWA to approximately six million Palestinian refugees in camps. He held the Israeli government fully responsible for the serious repercussions of this decision.
He affirmed that Israel’s ongoing attempts to target UNRWA aim to liquidate the refugee issue and nullify the right of return. He stressed that the refugee issue is a red line for the Palestinian people and their leadership, and a key objective of any future political settlement.
In a related context, the Supreme Fatwa Council in Palestine condemned the occupation’s demolition of the Hamza Mosque in Jenin camp in the northern West Bank and the Taqwa Prayer Room in Sur Baher, south of occupied Jerusalem, earlier today.
In a statement, the Council described the crime as part of the ongoing and escalating aggression against the Palestinian people, their holy sites, land, and homeland. It added that such actions are part of continuous attempts to impose a new reality aimed at undermining the identity and religious heritage of the Palestinian people.
The Council stated that the aggression against mosques targets the people’s right to practice their religious rituals and further fuels hatred and animosity in the region and worldwide.
It called for urgent Arab and Islamic action to halt Israeli attacks on Palestinian holy sites and protect them, noting that the international community’s silence against these crimes encourages the occupation to continue its violations.
