Amman, Feb 16 (Petra) — Lower House Speaker Ahmad Safadi called on Sunday for formation of a task force comprising the chamber’s economic committees, in partnership with the commerce and industry chambers, to address hurdles posed to the private sector.
He spoke in a meeting with heads and members of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce and the Parliamentary Economy and Investment, and Energy and Mineral Resources Committees.
Safadi said the government’s measures, particularly in the governorates, are a sign of its seriousness to work for everyone, stressing the commercial and industrial sectors’ role to keep the economy going, solve the problem of unemployment, and raise growth rates with national competencies relying on updated technologies.
Jordan and Amman Chambers of Commerce President, Senator Khalil Haj Tawfiq, called for an “institutionalized” partnership between the Lower House and the private sector and proposed formation of a joint committee to revisit economic laws, including Bar Association, landlords and tenants, insolvency, social security and labor legislation, as well as the billing system, medical wages and Labor Ministry measures to regulate the labor market.
Head of the Parliamentary Economy and Investment Committee Khaled Abu Hassan called the private sector “a real partner” in economic development, which warrants removing legal hurdles for it to contribute to the reduction of unemployment and deficit figures and raising growth rates.
Head of the Parliamentary Energy Committee Haitham Zayadin told the meeting that private sector achievements needed a helping hand by the legislative body in order to take down barriers and make a difference in the national economy.
