Petra, Feb.18 (Petra) – Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) on Tuesday signed a cooperation agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aimed at promoting “sustainable” tourism in the Petra region by integrating heritage, culture and innovation.
The agreement was signed by PDTRA Chairman, Dr. Fares Brizat, and UNDP Resident Representative, Randa Abu Al-Hassan.
Under the agreement, an outdoor art gallery will be established to display artworks by local and international artists, allow visitors to explore stories of innovation, resilience and creativity in Petra’s heritage, and contribute to transform the archeological site into a destination for art, culture and innovation.
By holding workshops, the joint cooperation also aims to empower women and youth to enhance creative confidence, allow craftsmen and artists to develop “innovative and sustainable” tourist products that reflect Petra’s “unique” identity and heritage.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Brizat noted the agreement would enhance Petra’s cultural tourism product, adding that the partnership would contribute to achieving “sustainable” development and enhance role of the local community in preserving cultural heritage.
Meanwhile, Abu Al-Hassan said joint cooperation would boost Petra’s tourism experience, noting that integration of heritage, culture and innovation would contribute to attracting additional visitors and providing them with “unique” experiences.
UNDP supports PDTRA by designing and raising funds to launch the new art gallery, hold workshops to empower women and youth, schedule tourist sustainable programs, and provide an innovative program for the PDTRA employees.
