Riyadh, June 26 (QNA) – The GCC has welcomed Oman’s decision, coordinated with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to open a temporary maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz to help evacuate more than 11,000 stranded seafarers and safeguard freedom of navigation.

In a statement, GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said the initiative reflected Oman’s “wise approach” to supporting regional security and stability, enhancing the safety of maritime navigation and upholding international law while helping to ensure the uninterrupted flow of regional and global trade.

The GCC also condemned Iranian claims and threats to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz following the announcement of the initiative.

The bloc said the temporary corridor would facilitate the evacuation of stranded seafarers, strengthen regional and global supply chains, and demonstrate Gulf states’ support for regional and international efforts to bolster maritime security, promote stability and reduce tensions in the region.
