Amman, July 26 (Petra) — The General Federation of Jordanian Trade
Unions (GFJTU) welcomed the Social Security Corporation’s (SSC)
announcement that it is close to completing the legal and procedural
arrangements needed to extend social security coverage to
self-employed workers and those in freelance occupations.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the federation described the move as
an important step toward expanding social protection and broadening
social insurance coverage to include a wider segment of the
workforce.

The federation expressed support for the SSC’s phased approach, which
is based on gradual implementation and coordination with professional
bodies regulating various occupations. It said the methodology takes
into account the nature of different professions and income levels
while balancing workers’ ability to pay contributions with their
entitlement to the protections provided under the Social Security
Law.

The federation also welcomed the decision to give priority in the
next phase to workers on ride-hailing and delivery platforms, citing
the occupational risks they face, particularly road traffic
accidents.

It said extending employment injury insurance and other social
security benefits to these workers would represent an important step
toward creating a safer and more stable working environment.

The federation reaffirmed its readiness to cooperate with the SSC and
other relevant stakeholders to support the initiative, expand social
protection coverage, and promote the principles of decent work,
yielding positive benefits for workers, their families, and Jordan’s
labor market.
