NRAA Documents Omani Customs,
Norms and Social Character

Muscat, 15 June 2026 (ONA) — The
National Records and Archives Authority (NRAA) is documenting, through its
field programmes, the customs, norms, social character and authentic traditions
of the Sultanate of Oman across various wilayats and governorates. This work is
part of its ongoing efforts to preserve the nation’s cultural and social
heritage and safeguard the components of national identity for future
generations.

A team of specialized researchers
has carried out field documentation of Omani customs, norms and social
character in different wilayats and governorates. This is achieved by observing
and recording social practices, inherited traditions, lifestyles, and community
values that distinguish Omani society, as well as documenting social occasions
and the heritage associated with them. These efforts reflect the richness and
diversity of Oman’s cultural heritage across various local environments.

The documentation work includes
collecting oral narratives and living testimonies from elderly individuals and
those with deep knowledge of cultural heritage. It also records manifestations
of Omani social character in dress, customs, and social behaviours, in addition
to documenting local norms that have historically contributed to strengthening
social cohesion and embedding the system of authentic values for which Omani
society is known.

These efforts fall within the specializations
of the National Records and Archives Authority, which aims to preserve and
document the national memory in all its components and to highlight Oman’s rich
and ancient civilizational and cultural heritage. This enhances community
awareness of the importance of preserving and documenting this heritage using
scientific methodologies that ensure its sustainability and accessibility to
researchers and interested parties.
