Amman, Sept. 8 (Petra) – Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar
announced on Tuesday that Israel will close the British Consulate in
East Jerusalem, which serves as London’s diplomatic mission to the
Palestinian Authority (PA) in the West Bank.
The move comes in retaliation for the UK and 11 other nations
imposing sanctions and trade bans on goods originating from illegal
Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
In addition to shutting down the consulate, Sa’ar announced a series
of countermeasures against London. Under the new restrictions,
Britain will no longer be permitted to participate in a US-led
coordination mission in the Gaza Strip, and British training programs
for PA security forces in the West Bank will be halted.
Israel also barred 12 UK figures, including elected officials and
members of Parliament, from entering the country.
