Baghdad, May 17 (Petra) – The opening session of the 34th Arab Summit, hosted by the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, kicked off on Saturday.

A number of Arab leaders and their representatives attended the event, alongside guests from several countries and UN organizations.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, head of the previous session, Bahraini Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, said: “Bahrain has proposed numerous initiatives approved by the Bahrain Summit, reflecting pan-Arab consistent position in supporting the Palestinian people in establishing their independent state on their national soil.”

The FM added that Bahrain will remain committed to following up on implementation of all these initiatives.

Additionally, he said 34th Baghdad Summit is being held amid major regional and international challenges, noting appreciation for lifting US sanctions on Syria and Saudi role in this regard.

The FM stated: “We categorically reject displacement of Palestinians from their land,” affirming Bahrain’s support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

The Bahraini top diplomat also expressed hope the summit would make “constructive” decisions to achieve Arab unity and serve common interests.
