Amman, May 14 (Petra) – Minister of Agriculture, Khaled Hneifat, announced Wednesday establishment of a specialized department for artificial intelligence (AI), aimed at fostering digital innovation and leveraging modern technologies to address Jordan’s agricultural challenges and strengthen national food security.

Speaking to “Petra,” Hneifat said the new ministry-affiliated facility would collaborate with research institutions and the private sector to develop smart solutions, mainly data-driven agricultural analysis, production forecasting, “efficient” use of natural resources such as water and fertilizers, and smart monitoring systems for early detection of plant diseases and pests.

Hneifat noted the initiative will create “new” avenues for the ministry’s cooperation with universities, research centers, and technology firms, positioning agriculture as a forward-looking sector driven by knowledge and innovation.

The ministry, he added, is “committed” to aligning with global technological trends and integrating AI as a “core” component of “sustainable” agricultural development.

On their feasibility, Hneifat stated AI applications would help boost productivity, minimize waste, and enhance crop quality, while also providing farmers with intelligent tools to support “timely and informed” decision-making.
