Amman, July 5 (Petra) – The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) and the
European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), in
cooperation with the European Union (EU) and the Green Climate Fund
(GCF), organized a community cleanup at Queen Rania Al Abdullah
Gardens on Sunday to promote sustainable waste management and public
participation.

The event was held under the patronage of GAM Committee Deputy
Chairman Ziad Rihani and attended by EU Ambassador Pierre-Christophe
Chatzisavas, EBRD Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean
Gretchen Biery, municipal officials, environmental experts, and
community representatives.

Young people and families took part in the campaign, which included
discussions among residents, local authorities, and environmental
specialists on waste management challenges and potential solutions.

The event also featured educational and interactive activities for
children and families aimed at raising environmental awareness and
encouraging responsible waste disposal.

Queen Rania Gardens Director Rasha Shawarbeh said the campaign sought
to promote environmental awareness, responsible waste management,
volunteerism and collective action to create cleaner, safer and
healthier public spaces.

The initiative is part of a broader EBRD- and donor-supported program
to improve solid waste management systems and advance sustainable
urban development in Jordan.

Since 2015, the EBRD and GAM, with EU support, have implemented waste
management projects, including an additional landfill cell at the
Ghabawi landfill and a system to extract landfill gas for electricity
generation.

Amman is also a member of the EBRD Green Cities program, which
supports cities in identifying environmental challenges and
developing solutions to strengthen urban sustainability.
