Dollar Rises as Euro Retreats

Singapore, 19 Oct 2026 (ONA) — The
dollar rose at the start of Asian trading today from levels close to its
one-month low, while violent protests in France weighed on the euro.

The euro fell 0.1 percent to $1.1225
as trading got under way in Asia. The decline in the single currency, which
carries the greatest weight in the dollar index, helped steady the US currency,
which traded at 101.83.

The dollar held steady against the
yen at 158 after Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said core inflation was
“very close” to the central bank’s 2 percent target.

The dollar was steady at 6.6842 yuan
in offshore trading ahead of China’s third-quarter gross domestic product data.

China’s economy is expected to have
accelerated slightly in the period after hitting its lowest level in more than
three years.

The Australian dollar rose 0.3
percent to $0.6965, while the New Zealand dollar held steady at $0.5656.

The pound sterling was steady at
$1.3329. Oil prices fell as trading resumed in Asia today, with Brent crude
futures down 1.7 percent to $108.02 a barrel, after US President Donald Trump
exempted Russia from sanctions and tariffs that could increase Russian fuel
exports.

According to the CME Group’s
FedWatch tool, federal funds futures are pricing in an 84 percent probability
that the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates unchanged at its next
two-day meeting beginning October 28, little changed from last Friday.

In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin rose
1.4 percent to $82,067.66, while ether climbed 3.0 percent to $2,420.22.
