Amman, June 23 (Petra) – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources
hosted an awareness lecture on Tuesday on radiation protection,
nuclear safety and security culture, and the regulatory role of the
Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) as part of its
“Visitor of the Month” program organized by the Knowledge Management
and Innovation Department.

Speakers outlined the fundamentals of radiation, its applications,
and Jordan’s nuclear regulatory framework. They explained the
different types of radiation, including alpha, beta, gamma, X-rays,
and neutrons, along with their natural and man-made sources,
biological effects on humans, and key radiation protection
principles.

The lecture centered around the role of nuclear energy as a
low-carbon power source with a minimal environmental footprint.
Presenters noted that nuclear electricity generation relies on the
fission of enriched uranium-235.

Participants were briefed on Jordan’s nuclear infrastructure, which
includes the Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR), Radioactive
Waste Treatment Facility (RWTF), Central Storage Facility (CSF), and
the Jordan Uranium Mining Company (JUMCO).

The EMRC revealed that it deployed 111 fixed radiation detection
systems across Jordan’s land, sea, and air entry points,
demonstrating the Kingdom’s robust regulatory and monitoring
capabilities.

More than 100 specialized personnel oversee these operations,
according to lecturers, while 20 radiation monitoring stations
distributed nationwide operate around the clock. Comprehensive
radiation surveys are conducted twice annually.

Amani Mahmoud, an EMRC chair, showcased an educational video about
Jordan’s radiation monitoring and detection system at border
crossings. The video detailed how radiation portal monitors detect
and prevent unauthorized movement of radioactive materials,
reinforcing national security, and protecting public health and the
environment.

The video pointed to the extensive coordination among Jordanian
institutions in maintaining high standards of nuclear safety.
