Amman, June 22 (Petra) – The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) and the
University of Jordan began preparing for the first phase of the
“Beautification and Development of Downtown Amman.”

Officials reviewed a number of heritage sites in downtown Amman
during a coordination meeting, identifying them as potential anchors
for an integrated tourism route and capitalizing on the area’s unique
archaeological and architectural character.

A joint technical team will carry out field surveys of the proposed
heritage sites before identifying a priority area to serve as the
starting point for restoration and redevelopment works.

The initiative, according to the director of the Old Amman
Neighbourhoods Project, Mohammed Abu Zaytoun, is part of GAM’s
broader strategy to revive the historic heart of Amman and transform
it into a vibrant cultural and tourism destination.

The project, he added, will focus on restoring heritage buildings,
upgrading infrastructure, and showcasing overlooked archaeological
landmarks, while drawing on academic expertise to ensure best
practices in preservation and development.

University of Jordan specialists presented proposals for scientific
restoration approaches for heritage structures and urban planning
concepts designed to integrate tourism routes into the city’s
existing fabric while preserving its visual identity.
