Urges World Leaders to Invest More in Peace

York, 21 Sep 2026 (ONA) — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres
has called on world leaders to invest more in peace, expressing regret over the
proliferation of conflicts and the deepening of divisions across the world.

This
came in a message delivered by Guterres today on the occasion of the
International Day of Peace, celebrated this year under the theme “Invest
in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” according to the United
Nations.

Guterres
said that “communities are suffering under the weight of violence and
division, conflicts are growing in intensity and complexity, transcending
national borders and causing immense suffering, while dialogue falters,
solutions remain elusive, and global solidarity is absent from the scene.”

Guterres
commended the efforts of volunteers, peace advocates, civil society actors and
peacekeeping forces, who work daily to bring communities closer together and
advance reconciliation.

The
Secretary-General urged world leaders to invest in sustainable development and
human rights, and in education in particular, reaffirming the necessity of
prioritising diplomacy, negotiation and peacekeeping.
