Amman, July 8 (Petra) – Lower House Environment and Climate
Committee, chaired by MP Jihad Abawi, met with representatives of the
Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) to discuss a study on the
legislative impact of the 2020 Framework Law for Waste Management.

The meeting was part of the committee’s ongoing monitoring effort of
environmental legislation and its assessment of its impact.

According to a committee statement issued on Wednesday, Abawi
underlined the MPs’ “strong” focus on environmental issues, based on
its legislative and oversight role.

The lawmaker called for developing the environmental legislative
framework to keep pace with current developments and enhance
environmental protection.

He stated the committee will continue to hold further discussions to
monitor the legislative impact of the law and hear from various
stakeholders, which would develop relevant legislation and achieve
the best practices in waste management.

For their part, the committee’s members affirmed the “growing”
parliamentary interest in environmental issues, calling for enacting
legislation to regulate the sector and strengthen the environmental
protection system.

The MPs also emphasized the need to develop a “comprehensive”
national strategy that aims to establish “an integrated” waste
database and promoting recycling processes, which would contribute to
achieving “sustainable” waste management and enhancing environmental
security.

In turn, WFD Representatives presented an overview of the 2020
Framework Law for Waste Management, adding that the Ministry of
Environment provides the legal framework for the law, as well as the
complementary roles of other ministries and institutions, including
the Ministries of Health and Interior.
