Amman, June 18 (Petra) — Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu
Soud and Director of the German Development Bank (KfW) office
Matthias Schmidt Rosen on Thursday signed a separate agreement linked
to the existing grant and project arrangements for the National Water
Carrier project, marking continued “long-standing” cooperation and
German support for Jordan’s water sector.

According to a ministry statement, the German contribution to the
project includes a €102 million grant from the German federal
government through KfW, in addition to €25 million provided through a
debt swap agreement, bringing total support to €127 million.

The ministry said the contribution represents one of several grants
allocated to the project, reflecting “sustained: German support for
Jordan’s water sector amid rising demand and climate-related
challenges.

The National Water Carrier project, implemented under a
public-private partnership (PPP) model, aims to supply Jordan with
around 300 million cubic meters of additional potable water annually
starting in 2030.

The ministry said the project includes construction of a “large”
desalination plant on the Red Sea and a 450-kilometer pipeline
network to transport desalinated water to Greater Amman and other
areas.

Additionally, the enterprise incorporates solar photovoltaic systems
to cover part of its energy needs, which would cut its carbon
footprint and support Jordan’s climate and clean energy targets.

The project, which is a key pillar of Jordan’s long-term water
strategy, is expected to “significantly” enhance the reliability and
resilience of water supplies for households, industry and
agriculture, supported by international financing and donor
contributions.
