Amman, January 5 (Petra) — Jordanian doctor Abdullah Balawi was released Sunday after being arrested by Israeli authorities while trying to cross into the Gaza Strip to join a medical relief mission.
Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs spokesperson Sufian Qudah said Jordan made “intensive” diplomatic efforts through the Kingdom’s embassy in Tel Aviv to secure Balawi’s release.
The doctor was safely returned through diplomatic channels at the Sheikh Hussein Bridge in the presence of embassy staff, he said.
Qudah noted that the Ministry’s Operations Centre and the Jordanian embassy were closely monitoring his detention, and that Israeli authorities were told Jordan rejected charges against Balawi.
Qudah said the ministry has been in contact with Balawi’s family since the arrest and was working with his lawyer.
He reiterated the ministry is keen on protecting the rights and safety of Jordanians.
