Ministers Discuss Queen Alia Airport Transport Links, Congestion

Amman, Oct. 19 (Petra) — Ministers on Monday discussed plans to
develop transport links to Queen Alia International Airport and
improve traffic between Amman and the governorates, where routes face
growing congestion.

During a meeting at the Transport Ministry, Deputy Prime Minister and
Minister of Local Administration Walid Masri, Transport and Labor
Minister Nidal Qatamin, and Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Minister
Muhammad Al-Khalayleh reviewed ways to link the airport with Amman
through Mahatta station and onward to Amman Civil Airport.

They also looked into transport options for the main routes into the
capital, and links to the New Amra city.

The ministers stressed the park-and-ride concept, a transport
strategy that relocates mass parking areas from central urban
locations to peripheral zones, where commuters leave their private
vehicles and continue trips by public transport.

This will encourage public transport use, reduce the number of
vehicles entering congested areas and ease traffic pressure, they
said.

The ministers also explored investing Awqaf Ministry land near the
airport in projects that support the transport system, which will
boost integration between urban planning and infrastructure projects,
including connectivity with the New Amra city.

They urged the need to come up with feasible, integrated plans and
closer coordination among relevant bodies towards a more developed
transport system.
