Occupied Jerusalem, May 12 (Petra) – Guards of Al-Aqsa Mosque Monday blocked an attempt by ultranationalist Jews to sacrifice a lamb at the Al-Haram Al-Sharif compound in occupied Jerusalem during the Jewish Passover holiday, in “a dangerous precedent” violating the sanctity of one of Islam’s holiest shrine.
Eyewitnesses told Petra’s correspondent in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank that Jewish settlers with a lamb tried to storm the compound, but were confronted and stopped by guards.
The Jerusalem Governorate issued a statement condemning the attempt to slaughter a lamb inside the compound as an “escalation and a dangerous development that cannot be ignored.”
It warned against the consequences of “such provocations”, which offend Muslims’ feelings and constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of the site.
“What happened is a deliberate criminal attempt to impose a new status quo at Al-Aqsa Mosque,” it said, holding the occupation authority fully responsible for “these dangerous acts,” which were carried out under the protection, and with the complicity of Israeli security forces.
Also today, 594 settlers stormed the compound under heavy escort by Israeli police and performed prayers as Muslim worshippers were denied entry to the compound.
