Parry Claims Maiden WTA Title
with Gritty Monterrey Final Victory

Monterrey, 30 Aug 2026 (ONA) — France’s
Diane Parry displayed remarkable resilience to overcome second-seeded Belgian
Elise Mertens, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3, in the final of the Monterrey Open tennis
tournament in Mexico, securing her maiden singles title on the WTA Tour in what
served as her final preparation ahead of the US Open.

Parry dominated the WTA 500-level
event from the outset, racing to a 4-1 lead in the opening set before the
30-year-old Mertens mounted a strong comeback to level the score. Parry then
claimed the subsequent game and broke Mertens’ serve to close out the first
set, 6-4.

Mertens, however, seized control
of the second set, winning six consecutive games and breaking her opponent’s
serve three times. Parry called for a medical timeout while trailing 5-0 in the
second set but returned to continue the match.

The Frenchwoman regained her
momentum in the decisive set, surging to a 5-1 lead before the Belgian began a
gradual fightback, claiming two consecutive games. Parry, demonstrating immense
fortitude, ultimately closed out the set 6-3 to secure her first-ever WTA
singles title in just over two and a half hours.
