Bulatov was an outstanding Russian conceptual artist, sculptor, and photographer. He was famous for paintings that combined figurative imagery with text.
Bulatov also worked as an illustrator of children’s books during the Soviet era. He lived in New York from 1989 and in Paris from 1992, but also carried out projects in Russia. With his painting Glory to the CPSU, created in 1975 and sold for $2.1 million in 2008, Bulatov topped the list of the most expensive living Russian artists for many years.— Ends/Khalid
