Ceasefire Agreed Around Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant to Avert Power Crisis
Vienna,
6 Sep 2026 (ONA) — A temporary ceasefire, brokered by the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has taken effect around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear
power plant to allow repair work aimed at restoring power supplies to the
Russian‑controlled facility in southeastern Ukraine.
The
UN agency said Ukrainian technicians are scheduled to begin repairs on the
damaged Ferrosplavna power line once the area has been cleared of mines.
Diesel
fuel reserves at the plant are running critically low, and it faces the risk of
a complete blackout within days unless electricity is restored or more fuel is
delivered, the IAEA added.
External
power to the plant has been cut since 20 August, leaving it reliant on
emergency diesel generators to cool its vital safety systems.
