The Gambia: 15th OIC Summit Wraps Up with Adoption of Banjul Declaration

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit, held on May 4-5 at the “Dawda Kairaba Jawara” International Conference Center, in the presence of several heads of member states, also adopted a resolution on Palestine and Al-Quds Asharif.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI was represented at the Summit by the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, who read out the Royal Speech at the solemn opening ceremony of the event.

The Palestinian question, peace and security, the situation of Muslim communities and minorities in non-member states, legal, humanitarian, social, cultural, economic, scientific and technological, media, administrative and financial issues were on the agenda of this 15th Summit, which is now chaired by the Republic of The Gambia.

The opening ceremony, presided over by His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, provided an opportunity for the leaders of the member states to discuss a range of political, economic, humanitarian, social and cultural issues, with a particular focus on rejecting hate speech and Islamophobia, promoting dialogue, and addressing climate change and food security.

The 15th session was preceded by a meeting of foreign ministers attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, accompanied by Morocco’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the OIC, Mustapha Mansouri, the Ambassador, Director General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation, Mohamed Methqal, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Moroccan Embassy in Gambia, Ahmed Belhaj, and several Ministry officials.

 

The 15th session of the Islamic Summit Conference, held under the theme "Enhancing Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development”, wrapped up Sunday in Banjul, The Gambia, with the adoption of the final communiqué and the Banjul Declaration.
