Amman, July 22 (Petra) – The United States announced Tuesday its decision to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), accusing the agency of promoting “divisive social and cultural issues.”
In a statement, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said UNESCO was “advancing a global ideological agenda” through its emphasis on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which she claimed were “at odds with the America First policy” of the current U.S. administration.
Bruce added that the decision followed a comprehensive internal review of U.S. involvement in UN agencies. “This step reflects President Trump’s commitment to reevaluating America’s engagement with international organizations that do not align with national interests,” she said.
The withdrawal is set to take effect in December 2026.
