Amman, Jan. 21 (Petra) – Adnan Abu Hasna, the media advisor and spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), stated on Tuesday that the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip is beyond the agency’s capabilities due to the extensive damage and destruction affecting all aspects of life in the Strip. However, he noted that the agency can contribute by rehabilitating infrastructure within the camps, resuming operations for its staff, and reactivating its wells.
According to the UNRWA’s official website, Abu Hasna highlighted that the agency’s operations have intensified over the past two days, following the entry of over a thousand aid trucks. Thousands of staff members are working at full capacity to distribute food supplies. He emphasized the need to prioritize essential services such as enabling municipalities to restore water supplies, repair wells, and assist electricity companies with high-voltage lines, wires, and generators.
He added that searching for the missing, whose numbers exceed thousands under the rubble, requires specialized teams with expertise, especially in handling unexploded ordnance, which the United Nations estimates at tens of thousands. Abu Hasna also expressed concerns about Israeli practices and obstacles faced by the agency and its staff, which may lead to further challenges.
