Workshop Held in Muscat Discusses Development
of Areas Irrigated by “Aflaj”

Muscat, 13 October 2026 (ONA) — A
workshop held in Muscat today explored ways to develop areas irrigated by “Aflaj”
(traditional irrigation channels) and enhancing the role of the local community
in consolidating the economic significance of Aflaj and securing their future.

The workshop focused on developing
Aflaj, while at the same time preserving their heritage value.

The workshop was organized by the
Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources and the Ministry of
Heritage and Tourism.

Participants in the workshop included
representatives from government units, “Aflaj” overseers, experts and
stakeholders operating in the sectors of water, tourism and agriculture.

The workshop stressed the need to
devise a guiding framework for regulating the development of Aflaj, defining
investment models and streamlining the roles and responsibilities of related government
departments, the local community and investors.
