Tanger Med Port Handles 10 Million TEU Containers in 2024, Up 18% on 2023

In a statement released on Wednesday, TMPA explained that the performance is due to the commitment of port operators and shipping lines, as well as the high productivity levels achieved by all teams.

It was also driven by the strengthening of certain facilities, the commissioning of new equipment, and the optimization of ports of call, which helped reduce waiting and maneuvering times, the source added.

In terms of roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) activity, the Tanger Med port handled 516,842 trucks in 2024, up 8.1% compared to 2023. TMPA explained that this traffic was mainly driven by industrial products, which grew by 6.8%, and agri-food products, which rose by 7.2%.

As for passenger traffic, the statement reported that 3,047,387 passengers passed through the Tanger Med port complex in 2024, marking a 13% increase compared to 2023. It also highlighted that the Marhaba campaign, the peak period for passenger transit, was carried out under optimal conditions during its 2024 edition.

Additionally, the two vehicle terminals of the port complex handled a total of 600,872 vehicles in 2024, representing a 4% increase compared to the previous year.

This traffic includes 368,843 export vehicles produced by the Renault factories in Melloussa and SOMACA in Casablanca, 170,519 vehicles exported by the Stellantis factory in Kenitra, 34,100 transshipment vehicles, and 27,410 imported vehicles.

Dry bulk traffic, for its part, stagnated with a slight growth of 1% over the previous year, totaling 584,945 tons handled, while the volume of hydrocarbons reached 7,640,524 tons, registering a drop of 22% compared with 2023.

TMPA pointed out that this decrease is mainly due to the transfer of part of the imports to the newly commissioned storage facilities in other Moroccan ports.

Furthermore, the Tanger Med port complex handled 142 million tonnes of goods in 2024, up 16.2% on 2023.

The statement also notes that 17,479 ports of call were recorded in 2024, up 3.42% on 2023, adding that these included 1,217 mega-ships (over 290 meters in size), up 13.74% on the previous year.

These results reflect the collective mobilization of port operators, local authorities and administrations in the day-to-day management of the port, in order to keep pace with the major changes in world maritime trade, TMPA concludes.

The Tanger Med port complex handled over 10.24 million TEU containers (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units of port traffic) in 2024, marking an 18.8% increase from 2023, according the Tanger Med Port Authority (TMPA).
