Local Markets Secured with Meat Supplies Ahead of Eid Al-FitrMuscat, 9 Mar 2026 (ONA) — The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources reported that the total imports of live animals to the Sultanate of Oman reached 285,890 heads between 1 January and 5 March 2026.This initiative aims to meet the local market’s demand for red meat, coinciding with the typical increase in consumption as Eid al-Fitr approaches.The Ministry detailed that these imports included 27,718 cattle and 258,172 sheep and goats. It continues to monitor import activities to ensure a steady flow of supplies to local markets. In addition to live animals, market needs are being met through local production as well as imports of chilled and frozen meat, all contributing to the fulfillment of rising seasonal demand.Statistical data revealed a significant increase in the number of imported animals compared to the same period last year. Sheep and goat imports rose from 141,008 heads in January 2025 to 156,419 heads in January 2026.Similarly, cattle imports increased from 7,725 heads to 11,098 heads during the same timeframe, reflecting a growing import trend to keep pace with domestic requirements.The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to securing market needs through coordination with livestock import companies and by providing the necessary facilities to streamline the process. This includes simplifying administrative procedures and accelerating quarantine transactions.To support these efforts, 239 livestock import permits were approved during the mentioned period to enhance supply abundance and maintain food stability.The Ministry remains active in monitoring market movements and the availability of food commodities in cooperation with relevant authorities and the private sector to ensure sustainable supplies across all governorates.—Ends/AG
