Amman, April 15 (Petra) — The National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) and the Jordanian-Egyptian Fajr Company for Natural Gas Transmission and Supply signed an agreement on Wednesday to establish a gas supply point for the Seventh Independent Power Producer (IPP7) project.
The project, which has a production capacity of approximately 700 megawatts, aims to strengthen Jordan’s power infrastructure and improve the overall efficiency of the Kingdom’s electrical grid.
The agreement was signed by NEPCO Director General Sufian Batayneh and the CEO of Fajr Jordanian-Egyptian Company, Yasser Salah El-Din. This partnership marks a critical phase in ensuring a reliable and high-capacity natural gas supply for the upcoming generation project.
Construction related to the gas supply point is expected to be completed by mid-2027. This timeline aligns with the IPP7 plant’s scheduled operational testing phase. Once fully operational, the project is intended to optimize energy resource utilization and enhance operational reliability.
Batayneh previously noted that the IPP7 combined-cycle power plant, recently approved by the Cabinet, is one of Jordan’s most significant strategic energy initiatives. The plant is expected to enter commercial operation between 2027 and 2028.
Upon completion, the project will meet approximately 10% of Jordan’s total electricity demand. By utilizing combined-cycle technology, the plant will contribute to a more sustainable energy mix while securing the national power supply.
Combined-cycle power plants are highly efficient because they use both a gas and a steam turbine simultaneously to produce up to 50% more electricity from the same fuel than a traditional simple-cycle plant. The waste heat from the gas turbine is routed to the nearby steam turbine, which generates extra power.
