Rome, June 08 (QNA) – The Italian Coast Guard announced the recovery of 10 bodies after a migrant boat capsized in waters off Malta.
In a statement, the Coast Guard said that the boat, which had departed from the Libyan coast, was carrying approximately 60 people.
It added that, according to the latest information, a fishing vessel in the area rescued about 48 people.
The Coast Guard noted that Malta had requested assistance in the search and rescue operation after the boat carrying migrants sank.
The boat sank about 45 nautical miles southeast of Malta, and the Italian Coast Guard unit joined the search operations.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced last year that approximately 24,500 people had gone missing or drowned in the Mediterranean Sea since 2014 while attempting to travel from Africa to Europe. (QNA)
