London, June 30 (QNA) – A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The US Geological Survey said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers.
No damage or casualties have been reported so far.
The region experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location at the intersection of the South American and Antarctic tectonic plates.
In August 2021, the South Sandwich Islands experienced a powerful earthquake exceeding magnitude 8.0, although no casualties or damage were reported due to its lack of population. (QNA)
