Amman, July 6 (Petra) — A national initiative to assess rangeland,
pastoralist and livestock breeder indicators was launched on Monday
under a partnership between the National Land Coalition in Jordan,
the Ministry of Agriculture and the International Land Coalition.

The initiative makes Jordan the first Arab country to apply this
global methodology under the “Mobility Matters” campaign, which is
being implemented in a limited number of countries worldwide

According to a Ministry of Agriculture statement issued Monday, the
initiative aims to establish a national database on the status of
rangelands, pastoralists and livestock breeders by measuring
indicators related to rangeland conditions, livelihoods, pastoral
mobility and the challenges facing the sector.

The assessment is intended to provide reliable, evidence-based data
to support the development of national policies and programs focused
on sustainable rangeland management and livestock development.

Chairman of the National Land Coalition in Jordan Dr. Raed Gharib
said the initiative marks an important step toward strengthening
knowledge of pastoral communities across the Kingdom and developing
national indicators that will inform policies to improve rangeland
management and enhance the livelihoods of pastoralists and livestock
breeders.

He said Jordan’s participation in the campaign demonstrates the
Kingdom’s commitment to adopting international best practices in the
sustainable management of natural resources.

Gharib added that the “Mobility Matters” campaign highlights the role
of pastoral mobility in preserving biodiversity, improving natural
resource management and enhancing the resilience of pastoral
communities to climate change.

The results of the assessment are expected to support the formulation
of more responsive policies that address the needs of pastoralists
and livestock breeders while promoting the long-term sustainability
of Jordan’s rangelands and natural resources.
