Amman, July 7 (Petra) – The government has already prepared and begun
implementing contingency plans to ensure the continuity of water
supplies under all scenarios, a source at the Ministry of Water and
Irrigation said Tuesday, responding to media reports that Jordan
would purchase additional water quantities from Israel.

The source stressed that securing adequate water supplies for
citizens and all sectors across the Kingdom remains a top national
priority, adding that Jordan continues to receive the water
allocations stipulated under the peace treaty.

The ministry is continuing efforts to complete the financial close
for the National Water Carrier Project, which is expected to supply
300 million cubic meters of water annually. Securing financial close
will pave the way for the project’s implementation, helping meet a
significant share of the Kingdom’s water needs and address its
chronic water deficit, according to the source.

The source said the ministry’s contingency plans include urgent
maintenance of a number of wells to increase their productivity, the
preparation and drilling of new wells in cooperation with the private
sector, and the expansion of non-conventional water sources,
including brackish water wells. They added that intensified campaigns
to curb violations against water resources have also helped recover
additional water supplies, partially offsetting the drinking water
deficit.
