Amman, July 9 (Petra) — The Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI) held a
specialized workshop to highlight the Jordan Eco-Label (JO-Ecolabel)
Program, a national initiative led by the Jordan Standards and
Metrology Organization (JSMO) with support from the German Agency for
International Cooperation (GIZ).

The program aims to encourage environmentally responsible production,
enhance the competitiveness of Jordanian products, and provide
manufacturers with a tool that adds market value while strengthening
consumer confidence and expanding export opportunities.

Eng. Ahmad Al-Bass, representative of the chemicals and cosmetics
industries sector at the Jordan Chamber of Industry, said the
JO-Ecolabel represents a strategic opportunity for local
manufacturers, enabling them to demonstrate their commitment to
environmental responsibility and meet the growing demand for
sustainable products in local and international markets.

He noted that the label would serve as a clear indication that
Jordanian products comply with environmental standards and reflect
global best practices in sustainable production.

During the workshop, attended by representatives from personal care
and cosmetics companies, Eng. Baraa Hayari, Director of the
Conformity Certificates Directorate at JSMO, highlighted Jordan’s
increasing focus on sustainability and green economy principles.

She said the initiative aligns with the objectives of the Economic
Modernization Vision, which seeks to enhance industrial
competitiveness, improve resource efficiency, promote innovation, and
support the transition toward more sustainable production and
consumption models.

Hayari explained that JSMO is developing the JO-Ecolabel as the first
environmental certification scheme in the region designed in
accordance with leading international practices. The certification
process will rely on scientifically based environmental criteria and
comprehensive product life cycle assessments to evaluate
environmental impacts from raw material sourcing through production,
use, recycling, and final disposal.

GIZ Policy Advisor David Musleh emphasized the significant progress
made in implementing the JO-Ecolabel Project, supported technically
through the Green Action in Enterprises (GAIN) project carried out by
GIZ.

The workshop sought to prepare Jordan’s industrial sector for future
market requirements by promoting sustainable production practices and
highlighting the growing importance of environmental performance as a
key factor in global competitiveness alongside product quality and
pricing.

Participants were briefed on the gradual rollout of the eco-label
program, which will initially cover tissue paper products and laundry
detergents, followed by personal care and cosmetics products in the
second phase and cement products in the third phase. The session also
covered certification requirements, applicable fees, and the role of
universities in preparing product life cycle assessment studies.

The JO-Ecolabel Program is a voluntary national certification
initiative awarded to products and services that demonstrate strong
environmental performance. Applicants must meet established
environmental criteria, comply with national regulations, and fulfill
the requirements set by the program’s guidelines.
