Cairo, July 18 (Petra) – Jordan took part in the 2026 Conference on
the question of Jerusalem, held Saturday in Cairo, under the theme:
“Jerusalem: The Frontline of Displacement and Annexation and the Key
to Just and Lasting Peace.”

The conference, organized by the United Nations Committee on the
Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, in
partnership with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC),
brought together government officials, diplomats, representatives of
regional and international organizations, and experts on Palestinian
affairs.

Jordan’s representative Wasfi Kilani, Executive Director of the
Hashemite Fund for the Restoration of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of
the Rock, said the conference was held at a critical time, given
escalating challenges facing the Palestinian cause, particularly the
city of Jerusalem, from the Israeli occupation, which requires a
unified stance and more effective action.

He told Petra in an interview that Jerusalem and its Islamic and
Christian holy sites have been a top priority of His Majesty King
Abdullah II.

The King, he pointed out, is leading ongoing diplomatic and political
efforts to defend holy sites at various regional and international
forums, stemming from the historical Hashemite custodianship over the
holy sites in Jerusalem.

Kilani said occupation does not create any legal right, nor can it
grant any legitimacy to unilateral measures aimed at altering the
historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem.

At the meeting, Kilani called on the international community to take
concrete action for the activation of relevant international
resolutions and hold the occupation authority accountable for ongoing
violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites, and provide
international protection to the residents of Jerusalem.
